The buffalo (bison) herd on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, which is located in present-day southeastern Montana USA, is a powerful symbol of a strong and independent historical era of the Tribe. The tribal herd has not been a priority to today's tribal government, and languishes. Never more than 200, and usually far less, Northern Cheyenne cull the herd for feeding at Sun Dance ceremonies and other significant cultural events.
